Oscar Nominations Overlook the Achievements of Women and People of Color - Women's Foundation California

“The announcement of the Oscar nominations are a time of celebration for many, but today, I was disappointed to see no nominations for female directors and that only 1 out of 20 acting nominees was a person of color. The cultural impact of overlooking the achievements of women and people of color in cinema leads to diverse voices being locked out of an opportunity that progresses careers, shines a light on the underrepresented and validates their stories.

Last year, we launched The Culture Change Fund to highlight the need for more women and people of color to have a seat at the table in the industry, and we hope that the Academy will reward stories and storytellers that more accurately represent the world we live in.” – Surina Khan, CEO of The Women’s Foundation of California statement on the recent The Academy Award Oscar nominations.”
