Congratulations to the Domestic Worker Justice Team of the Women’s Policy Institute! Their proposed bill for a California Domestic Worker’s Bill of Rights received extensive press coverage this past week!
Domestic Worker Justice team members Altagracia Garcia, Beatriz Herrera, Katie Joaquin, Claudia Reyes and Nancy Zuniga are in our 2010-11 Women’s Policy Institute class. WPI fellows learn how to write bills, educate legislators and organize community support to pass proposed legislation.
This past weekend, domestic workers, employers and their families gathered at the Women’s Building in San Francisco to show support and raise awareness of the bill. The Domestic Worker’s Bill of Rights would extend equal rights to domestic workers for overtime pay, meal and rest breaks, reporting time pay, a safe and healthy workplace and worker’s compensation. It would also provide paid sick days and vacation, among other benefits (Download flyer for full scoop).
