Urban Habitat’s Director of Programs Connie Galambos Malloy has been selected as one of the first eight members of California’s inaugural Citizens Redistricting Commission. The Commission will re-draw the boundaries of state legislative, congressional and Board of Equalization districts. The boundaries are redrawn every 10 years to reflect California’s changing demographics, helping communities achieve fair and equal representation.
Connie is a former fellow of the Women’s Policy Institute (WPI), a program of the Women’s Foundation of California. She credits the time she spent in Sacramento as an Institute fellow as key to her decision to apply for the Commission. “My experience at WPI means I will have so many resources to drawn upon. WPI was where I learned about state commissions. When I saw the redistricting commission opportunity, I knew it was a long shot but felt that I had something to offer and that I would have a lot of support.”
Connie says she felt a sense of responsibility to apply for the Commission in order to represent the values and concerns of California’s women and families, particularly low-income women.
As part of her work with the Commission, Connie will spend the next year at hundreds of meetings with local communities to gather feedback about how and where boundaries will be drawn. Using census data, the Commission will create draft maps, and hold more hearings to gather feedback before submitting final maps to the legislature for approval.
