“When you give a woman voice, and you give her the knowledge of her own power and [the knowledge] that she has control over her own life, her children’s lives, and in her community . . . that’s giving somebody freedom.”
~Kim Carter, Women’s Policy Institute fellow, ED of Time for Change Foundation
Ten years ago, the Women’s Foundation of California realized that public policy was key to fixing some of California’s toughest challenges. In addition, the Foundation saw that women who are on the front lines of facing those challenges know what needs to be done — low-income women, formerly incarcerated women, women living in farm working communities. They just need the support and information to take strategic action that moves their ideas and solutions to action. That’s why the Foundation created the Women’s Policy Institute, which provides that support and that knowledge. Now in its seventh year, this dynamic 9-month program trains grassroots women leaders on how to make a difference through public policy. It has graduated almost 200 women and has resulted in 11 new laws that positively impact California’s women, families and communities.
