Chala Bonner is a native of Richmond, CA. She is the Civic Engagement and Political Education Organizer at the Safe Return Project. She has a passion for helping others in her community and leveling the playing field for formerly incarcerated black people and people of color. Her goal is to bring equity in the community by overcoming barriers, challenges, and bring healing to those who have had traumatic experiences with the criminal justice system. Chala is currently leading the DA Accountability Table in Contra Costa County. She is influencing policy changes at the local level. She was also appointed to the Racial Justice Oversight Body by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and she is coleading the Racial Justice Coalition. She partnered with Californians for Safety and Justice in an effort to get AB 1076 an AB 1331 passed. Her motto: “Don’t let your past dictate your future.”
