Nishara Gunasekara is the Senior Policy Advocate at Family Violence Law Center (FVLC) in Oakland, California. Focusing on systems change through advocacy, Nishara works at the intersection of homelessness and domestic violence to ensure policies, homeless response systems, and housing infrastructure are equipped to meet the unique needs of gender-based violence survivors. Nishara’s commitment to reproductive rights, health, and justice is informed by her experience in the Orange County criminal and family court systems and her published research on the impact of people’s contraceptive method choice. She believes issues such as economic justice, housing insecurity, and interpersonal/community violence can all impact a person’s reproductive health and choices. Nishara received her BA in Economics and Feminist, Gender, Sexuality Studies from Scripps College in Claremont, California.
