The spirit of rebellion can and should be joyous! To celebrate Women’s History Month our Board Member and DJ C.M. Samala created “Rebel Joy,” a playlist that highlights and honors the sounds and power of women and gender nonconforming artists in California.
Inspired by a monthly she started in the wake of the 2016 elections, C.M. Samala embraces the importance of Rebel Joy. And that’s what this playlist is all about. Centered on inclusion and inspired by California, the artist selection for the playlist is largely inspired by the etymology of the state. The selections reflect our diversity with songs from the 60’s until this year.
Dance, music, and art all have always played an essential role in the social movements of the past and continue to be important today. The Rebel Joy playlist reflects the spirit of this moment and the steps it took to get here.
C.M. Samala is a creative leader focused on building new paradigms for early stage investing in companies founded by teams of people from spectacular, unconventional and unprecedented backgrounds.
She is currently in her 14th year as a resident DJ at Madrone Art Bar and is the Founder and still resident DJ of the West Coast’s longest running 90’s dance party which is also SF’s original 90’s dance party.
Samala embodies multitudes — a believer and weaver of strong social fabric, a Wharton business school grad, a native New Yorker turned Californian, a purveyor of culture, a daughter of immigrants and a DJ that’s played all over the world. Her work and writing in investing, technology, social innovation and civics has been featured at the Obama Administration’s White House LGBTQ Technology & Innovation Summit, at the Aspen Institute, in publications like Forbes, The New Yorker, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, TechCrunch and Al-Jazeera, Refinery29 and recognized by NBC, Congress, and the California Legislature.
As a consultant she worked with brands like Chanel, Clif Bar, and Cirque du Soleil. She was a Senior Advisor for Social Innovation for Mozilla, contributor to the Aspen Institute’s Latinos and Society Program, and a member of New Media Ventures’ Investment Committee. Samala currently serves on the World Food Programme Innovation Accelerator Advisory Council.
