Alexandria House wins our $10,000 grant! - Women's Foundation California

pma-email-alexandria-houseWe are honored to announce the winner of our first ever People’s Momentum Award contest:

Congratulations, Alexandria House!

To win the contest, they garnered 3,280 unique votes from their community of supporters. A total of 45,662 votes was cast for 337 organizations.

Alexandria House is an incredible organization based in Los Angeles. For the last 17 years, they have provided a social safety net and a launch pad for single women and mothers with children who are trying to move from emergency shelters to permanent housing.

At any given moment, Alexandria House offers hospitality, care and support to approximately 24 women and children. What’s more, their model has proven very successful: Over 80 percent of the women who have moved through the program have succeeded in securing financial stability and permanent housing.

“In 2012-13 fiscal year, we’ve seen more than $150,000 in losses in funding from sources such as United Way and LAHSA, which have prioritized the “chronically homeless” and veterans. As a result, we’ve been desperately trying to maintain the services that we offer—because people’s needs are greater. This grant will enable us to continue providing that much needed support as well as help build community for our current and former residents,” said Judy Vaughan, executive director of Alexandria House.

We want to acknowledge the other 336 organizations that have been nominated—and the 45,600 people who took the time to vote. Thanks to you, we got an insider’s look at how these organizations are improving the communities around them. We received heartwarming notes of support from many passionate community members like this one:

“Without Get On The Bus (GOTB), many children of incarcerated parents would never see their incarcerated mothers and fathers. Their important work does more than help children work through the separation; it is a true lifeline and a gift.”

This contest was a powerful reminder of the important work nonprofits of all sizes and shapes are doing every day to benefit California’s women and families.
