Let's Get to Work!

Each week take action and build feminist political power.

What is Gender Justice Wednesday?

We know the next three months are going to be busy. But if the last several months have demonstrated anything it’s that collectively we have power. At WFC, we’re ready to take the next step but we can’t do it without you. Join us every Wednesday, starting August 12th!

Each Gender Justice Wednesday, we’ll highlight actions focusing on everything from voter engagement, to the important state and local issues our WPI fellows, alums, and grant partners are working on, some of which will be on the ballot in November. All you have to do is take ACTION!

We’ll do the work so you can be an activist. All you have to do is make the call, send the email, post, or tweet! It’s easy, effective, and we’ll make sure each action takes less than 5 minutes.

It’s on us to ensure our representatives in Sacramento and Washington pay attention to the policies that directly impact historic and systemic racial, economic, and gender injustice.

We must claim our power to hold our representatives accountable, and encourage them to listen, learn, and lead.

ACTION: September 23rd

  • SB 555, the Jail Fair Access for Connections to Support (FACTS) Act will reduce the heavy financial burden placed on the families and support systems of incarcerated individuals. SB 555 aims to eliminate the exorbitant costs of necessary forms of communication like phone calls and emails, regulate the prices for goods sold inside county jails (hygiene products and food), and require that profits made from these services are reinvested to support people incarcerated in California County Jails, as well as their transition back into their communities.
  • AB 2542, the Racial Justice Act, prohibits the state from seeking or obtaining a criminal conviction, or from imposing a sentence, based on race, ethnicity or national origin. This bill seeks to establish a statewide policy that makes it unlawful to discriminate against people of color in the state’s criminal justice system.

ACTION: September 15th

  • SB 493 will support California student survivors by creating a common set of accountability standards for public colleges and universities.

WFC partners: Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) and WPI alum Payal Sinha.
  • SB 1237 or The Justice & Equity in Maternity Care Act would enhance the role of nurse-midwives, leading to greater access, especially for Black and Latinx pregnant people, who are typically underserved and experience higher infant and maternal mortality.

WFC partners: California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, Black Women for Wellness, and WPI Class of 2020 Reproductive Health, Rights, & Justice team.

ACTION: September 9th

  • This week, we’re asking you to call Governor Gavin Newsom and tell him to support the Health and Safety for All Workers Act (SB 1257)! SB 1257 would give domestic workers the same legal rights as other workers to the health and safety training and protective equipment they need.

This bill would also protect them against retaliation when advocating for their own health and safety at work. We already helped to pass the California Domestic Worker Bill of Rights in 2016, we know how important it is to protect essential workers.

We’re proud to join with WFC partner Stronger California on this bill.

ACTION: September 2nd

  • There are only 30 days left to invest in our future and communities by participating in the #2020Census! This week we’re asking you to make sure that you, your family, and your community are counted!

    Fill out your form today:
    Online: my2020census.gov
    By Phone: 844-330-2020
    By Mail: U.S. Census Bureau

If you already have filled out your form share this message on social and ask your friends and family if they have filled out the census.

ACTION: August 26th

  • This week, we’re joining the TGI Justice Project to demand CDCR evacuate incarcerated folks who are at risk of exposure to the wildfires. During the fires in Vacaville, people in CMF and Solano said that embers were falling onto the prison yard on August 19. People are still reporting that smoke is filling the prison, because the windows won’t close and there is poor ventilation. There were also reports that the smoke was so strong that people were having serious trouble breathing and their eyes were burning.

Let’s call the number and follow the script below:
    Governor Gavin Newsom: 916-445-2841

We’re proud that Women’s Policy Institute alums from TGI Justice Project are involved with this campaign. A grantee partner of WFC, TGI Justice Project is a group of transgender, gender variant and intersex people—inside and outside of prisons, jails and detention centers — creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom.

ACTION: August 19th

  • On Thursday, August 20th, Senate Appropriations will determine the fate of our Co-Sponsored bill AB 732 (Bonta), the Reproductive Dignity of Incarcerated People Act. Created with the Women’s Policy Institute 2019 Reproductive Justice Team, this bill would ensure that the humanity and basic needs of incarcerated pregnant people are not dismissed amidst this global pandemic.

Simply call the number and follow the script below:
    Senator Anthony Portantino: 916-651-4025
    Governor Gavin Newsom: 916-445-2841

We’re proud that Women’s Policy Institute alums from these organizations are involved with this campaign: California Latinas for Reproductive Justice (co-sponsor), Young Women’s Freedom Center (co-sponsor), ACLU of California (co-sponsor), ACCESS Women’s Health Justice, Black Women for Wellness, Citizens for Choice, Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Orange County Women’s Health Project, and Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity.

ACTION: August 12th

  • Demand that California Legislators vote YES on AB 1253 and fund bold changes to our budget to invest in our communities and our future.

Both the uprising in our streets and this pandemic have exposed our nation’s – and California’s – greatest challenges: structural racism, inequality, exclusion of immigrants, and the economic vulnerability of the vast majority of people, whether poor, working class, or middle class. All of this while the rich have only gotten richer.

If California leaders are not brave enough to tax the privileged, state budget cuts will devastate working families, seniors, students, and immigrants even more – while continuing to give billionaires and corporations a free pass.

We’re proud that Women’s Policy Institute alums from these organizations are involved with this campaign: California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA), California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN), Children’s Defense Fund-CA, and PolicyLink.

In solidarity with the Commit to Equity Coalition, we ask you to take ACTION!

Thank you for showing up, with energy and intention, to advance the ideals of justice and equity for all Californians.
