LA Exhibit Celebrates the Power of Art to Heal - Women's Foundation California

By Kim Kenny, Development and Communications Officer, Women’s Foundation of California

A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year with an incredible art exhibit, Pearls of Wisdom, with acclaimed artist Kim Abeles. Over 800 survivors of domestic violence have created art pieces, “pearls,” for the exhibit. These pearls celebrate life, triumph and the ability to heal through art. The Women’s Foundation of California is proud to have been the very first funder of A Window Between Worlds – we wrote their first check! Since then, AWBW has brought its unique program to more than 50,000 survivors of domestic violence.

AWBW uses art to to support the healing of domestic violence survivors. Through creative expression and visual art, women and children recover a sense of renewal and power. Their images of hope, survival and strength educate the public and become “a window between worlds” for survivors taking steps to change their lives.

I’m not an artist, but I had the opportunity to make my own pearl with friends and colleagues at the AWBW studio. Thirty five women came together to create pearls that night. We had an amazing time learning about the art projects and the the healing process, laughing and sharing our stories.

The Pearls of Wisdom exhibit runs from March 2 -31 at the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Women’s Foundation of California CEO and President Judy Patrick and other community leaders, advocates and celebrities have created pearls for the exhibit. If you’re in Los Angeles from March 2 – 31 I hope you will visit this exhibit that celebrates fearless women! You will be inspired and awestruck by the creativity and stories.
