Maria is a first-generation South American immigrant with twenty years in the U.S. She moved to the Bay Area from Miami to pursue a career that would help folks uncover their power. Her goal has been to ensure all workers regardless of immigration status, language spoken, skin color, or gender have equal access to protections, sustainable wages, and upward mobility in their workplaces. She began this journey by organizing and doing policy advocacy with the Restaurant Opportunities Center. There she devoted six years to ensuring restaurant workers around the country felt safe, heard, part of a community, and with power. She has since moved to help unions and worker centers within Jobs with Justice (a coalition) to coordinate workers’ rights campaigns and broadened her scope across industries and sectors. Maria is committed to helping move forward workers’ rights policy and implementation locally, statewide, and hopefully beyond.
