This Pride Month, we are not just celebrating. We are taking action.
This week, a sitting U.S. Representative declared that “homosexuality has no place in America.” In Texas, students returned to a school year governed by Senate Bill 12 — a law that strips them of their chosen names, silences their communities, and bans the clubs where LGBTQ+ youth find belonging. And across the country, trans people, especially trans women of color, continue to face legislative erasure, discrimination, and violence at every turn.
Pride was never just a parade. It was born from rebellion, from Black and brown trans women who threw the first punches at Stonewall, who said enough. It was built by the people who refused to disappear, by the ballroom communities who turned rejection into art, by queer and trans people who cared for each other through the AIDS epidemic while their country looked away.
So much of the culture we move through every day, the language, the fashion, the performance, the very notion of chosen family, was forged in that fire.
Now it is our turn to show up.
At Women’s Foundation California, we are radically pro-transgender. We believe that gender justice is inseparable from economic justice, racial justice, and the full liberation of all of us in California. We fund and support LGBTQ+ organizations, trans-led movements, and the communities most targeted by today’s attacks.
And we take our cues from the young people like those in Texas and across this country who, when the state tried to erase them, kept organizing. They kept showing up to school board meetings. They kept calling each other by their names. They went to bookstores and churches and found each other. That resilience, joyful, stubborn, and clear-eyed, is what we are here to protect and expand.
