Just yesterday, the Supreme Court delivered a verdict undermining decades of hard fought activism, striking at what is widely hailed as a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement and our multiracial democracy. This month, the war in Iran still rages, murdering innocent people and extending the colonialist legacy of American policy. And this year, thousands of our neighbors, friends, and family members have been thrown into detention centers across the country, while just this week, ICE quietly opened another detention center in a former California prison.
We see a pattern. Gutting the Voting Rights Act. Spending trillions on war in Iran and Lebanon. Billions for weapons to fuel genocide in Palestine. There is extraordinary political will to attack, disenfranchise, and defund our communities – working class communities. There is almost nothing to protect them.
This is not an accident. It’s a deliberate use of power by those who seek to disenfranchise us. But we have power too.
We are essential workers, civil rights and community advocates, working people, and immigrants – somos el pueblo – representing the many communities that power the state of California. Tomorrow, on May 1, 2026, we flex our economic and political power.
Only the people – solo el pueblo – can take the bold action we need to demand accountability, justice, dignity, and a future rooted in freedom and solidarity.
We demand more for our communities, not for the fascists or the billionaires:
- Tax the rich. Fund healthcare and education, not war and deportation.
- No ICE. No war. No private armies serving power.
- Expand democracy. Hands off our vote.
- Divest from war. Stop arming Israel.
- End the raids. Dignity for all. Legalization for all.
- Invest in people.
This is not a radical ask. This is what care looks like in action.
There are people in this state who have never been thanked for what they do. Who clean, care, build, and serve – and then go home to communities that are no longer safe. This May Day is for them. Tomorrow, we show up for each other and with each other. Because our labor built this state. Our presence makes it home.
No fear. No silence. Just people power.
