Two-Thirds of California Voters Say Students Should Have Access to the Abortion Pill on Campus

Supported by seven in ten women

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A new poll conducted by Change Research found that strong majorities of California likely voters support the availability of the abortion pill on university campuses. These results highlight the significant level of support behind SB 320, the College Student Right to Access Act authored by Sen. Connie Leyva (D-Chino). The bill is expected to be considered by the full Senate as soon as early next week.

“The data makes it clear that Californians agree that once a student has decided to end a pregnancy, they shouldn’t be forced to go off campus to see a provider they don’t know,” said Surina Khan, CEO, the Women’s Foundation of California, one of the foundations that has stepped forward to offer funding for implementation of the measure. “Supporting the academic and personal success of California’s students is good for them and for the state as a whole. Our leaders in Sacramento should reflect the will of the voters and take this groundbreaking step forward for student access to abortion care.”

Key findings from the poll include:

  • Two-thirds (64%) of California likely voters say students should be able to access the abortion pill at student health centers rather than having to travel off campus to another provider, including 72% of women voters.
  • Sixty percent (60%) agree that health centers on college and university campuses should provide the full range of reproductive health care including the abortion pill.
