Women’s Foundation California is situated on the unceded land of the Lisjan Ohlone people and the ancestral territory of countless Indigenous tribes across California, including the Nisenan in northern California and the Chumash along the California coast. Grounded in this historical context and the present reality, we acknowledge the injustices endured by Indigenous communities both within and beyond California. Specifically, the exploitation of the land, of which we have become beneficiaries. We are dedicated to taking actions that promote reciprocity and restore a rightful connection between the land, its people, and the dynamics of power.
We have a longstanding commitment to investing in organizations led by Indigenous communities. Today, we ask for your support in two crucial ways: 1) listen to Native voices and perspectives, and 2) contribute tangible resources to Indigenous-led initiatives. Here are a few of our current and past grant partner organizations that we wholeheartedly endorse and encourage you to consider supporting:Recognizing our organization’s presence on land acquired through historical injustices, we understand the importance of acknowledging our privilege and the necessity of being accountable. In addition to our annual grant, we’ve committed to paying an annual Shuumi Land Tax to the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. This is just one step in our ongoing efforts to contribute to the rematriation of Indigenous lands and their return to the hands of Indigenous communities. Let’s commit to continuing our support, acknowledgments, and celebrations that extend far beyond Native American Heritage Month. If you live in the Bay Area, learn more about Shuumi Land Tax and how you can give. Or if you are outside of the Bay Area reach out to your local indigenous organization and participate in a movement to support the self-determination and sovereignty of the local Indigenous community. Together, we can take meaningful steps toward rectifying past wrongs and ensuring a more just and equitable future for all.
