Our Economic Security SPI-State team is driving real change—this time by taking on the ways California’s public benefits system can unintentionally harm survivors. Their bill, AB 969 (Rodriguez), just passed the Assembly with unanimous support. Now, it’s headed to the Senate, and we need to keep the momentum going.
AB 969 makes sure survivors of domestic violence aren’t penalized when accessing CalWORKs. It improves transparency, strengthens access to hardship waivers, and ensures that program requirements don’t become yet another obstacle to safety and stability. As our team continues meeting with legislators and navigating the next stages of the process, this is where you come in.
Here’s how to support the bill right now:
- Submit a letter of support to the Senate Human Services Committee by June 30
- Sign on using our quick coalition form
- Spread the word to your networks, especially those working on survivor advocacy, public benefits, or economic justice
This legislation is about making sure our safety net lives up to its name. Survivors shouldn’t be pushed deeper into crisis by the very systems meant to support them. AB 969 brings us one step closer to a CalWORKs program that is trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and grounded in dignity.
Your voice can help get this bill across the finish line.
Join us in pushing AB 969 forward—submit your letter or sign on by June 30.
